Nutritional Louisiana Cuisine

Yes, that is what you heard, nutritional.

Louisiana is known for its cuisine but frankly most of the time it is not the healthiest food.  Delicious, enjoyable but rarely healthy.  I cannot tell you how many people I have met who have moved to New Orleans and said they love it, the culture, the food…but they gained 20 pounds in the first two months.  Call it the newly-moved 20!

Then you have the myriad of food sensitivities and allergies that affect so many people today.  Dairy, gluten, wheat, etc.  Sometimes it just makes a person uncomfortable but other times it results in illness or potentially life-threatening events.

Include the myriad of processed ingredients so prevalent in our food chain and we have a gastronomical and health nightmare.

But does it have to be that way?  Sometimes traditional recipes require just a slight alteration to make it a healthier option and without sacrificing any of the taste.  Sometimes it is going back to ingredients used in the past, now substituted by cheaper, more readily available, but more processed and less healthy ingredients.  Sometimes a recipe just cannot be made both healthy and tasty, and if that is the case we won’t make it.

At NULAfoods we know there is a better way to enjoy the food we love.  It is said that necessity is the mother of invention and in many respects that is the story of NULAfoods.  Members of our family became sensitive, even highly allergic to certain ingredients, prompting us to decide…exclude beloved traditional dishes or adapt to make them healthier without sacrificing the end product.  While there are more options today for food sensitive people, many of these options are not very tasty.  Quite frankly, some are just downright nasty.  Sorry, but true.  The key to an enjoyable life is balance and from New Orleans the balance best include flavor.   After all, everywhere else you eat to live but in New Orleans…you live to eat.  So, eat healthy, eat flavorful, eat NULAfoods!!
